How to Job Search on LinkedIn (the HARD way)

– If you are a serious job seeker looking for a job through LinkedIn, it is best to contact professionals who are active on LinkedIn in the target company. The easiest way to do this is to do a blank search first, just click on the search bar and press enter, select news, all filters, author company, add your target company, display the results, and now you have all the active LinkedIn list of users. Simple, right? Now comes the hard part, where you go through the posts and find authors who fall into these three categories.

Those who have recruiters on their job titles, those who have an "I'm hiring" cover image on their profile pictures, and those who have recently started a new role at the company. Ready for the hardest part? Leave meaningful comments on 5 posts a day for the next two weeks and I promise you will see meaningful progress in your plans to get into your target company . As Cultivated Culture's Austin Belcak has said many times, you can't do the same thing as other people and expect different results. If something is easy for you, it is also easy for others. So to expand on the first tip, one obvious reason you want to leave comments on these posts is to make your bio stand out. Recruiters and hiring managers at the same company are often connected on LinkedIn, so the more comments you have, the more likely you are to appear on their radar. Of course, not all reviews are created equal, and the effort you put into the content of your review shows how serious you are as a candidate. For example, 95% of comments on just starting a new job are some form of congratulations. So, if you leave a question and politely ask them to share a tip or takeaway that helped them succeed, you'll stand out. Specifically, three things can happen after you post a comment . First, they get back to you and tell you something that helped them get a job, which is great. Two, recruiters at that company might even get flagged in the post, and they'll see your insightful comments, check your profile, and turn you into a candidate.

Third, it opens the door for you to send follow-up friend requests in a very natural way. I'll go into more detail on this. Do all your comments get replies? Of course not, like Tinder or Bumble, you swipe right 100 people , 10 of them match you , 5 of them will reply to your cheesy chat, and 2 Guilty and going out on a date with you. In 100 comments, you'll get responses, you'll expand your network, you'll get coffee chats. This will get you farther than blindly applying online. The third step is to ask a sincere question. Leading with a positive attitude is exactly what it sounds like. Open your contact request with a positive attitude , plus extra points if you can do it.


For example, congratulations on your new blog, thank you for sharing your experience with others, or even something as simple as wishing you had a great week that puts a smile on people's faces. The second step is where the magic happens, and is choosing one of the three dimensions you want to cut into . In order of difficulty, talk about their career paths, observe a piece of content they share or create, or provide some value. It's no surprise that while you'll need to research your contacts to get the second step right, it's easier than you might think.

Their career paths are on their LinkedIn profiles. Do they create certain content? The Activity section shows the posts they have recently shared or commented on. What about providing value? See if they are active on other social media, see what they post on those platforms. A friend of mine saw a VP post on renovating a house on Instagram and sent her a recommendation for a paint product. That's what provides value. The third step, in my opinion, works because asking a real question by default makes it seem like you're asking for guidance from your contacts.

Doing so will boost their self-confidence, make them feel good, and show them that you've seriously thought about it. To demonstrate that this three-step structure works, I'll share an example that worked for me recently.
